Meet the Maker: Dave Murray from Mr Twist

Inspired by his wife’s American heritage and family trips to Disneyland, Mr Twist offers nostalgic sweet treats, from freshly rolled pretzels, dole whip soft serve to fresh lemonade.

Their journey to Made began from the humble lemonade stand, fundraising for a school trip. Before long, they invested in a food trailer and opened Atticus American Treats in the CBD, followed by Mr Twist in Made.

“After fundraising for the trip, friends and neighbours kept giving us lemons that would usually go to waste, so we kept going. We eventually got a food trailer and added ‘Dole Whip’ (vegan) soft serve that they sell in Disneyland, which was really well received. And to offset the slowed ice cream sales in winter, we introduced the soft pretzels, another great American treat that you can’t really find in New Zealand. To our surprise, this quickly became our best seller at Made!”

Aside from pretzels, what’s the crowd favourite?

That would have to be our two flavour twist cones - two flavours of soft serve Dole Whip giving you the best of both all the way down the cone.

Tell us about your latest invention.

We’ve just released our Watermelon Sugar Sundae. Raspberry sherbet on a vanilla cone was always my go-to at Mr Whippy trucks so I decided to level it up with watermelon Dole Whip, berry popping boba and a slice of fresh seasonal watermelon. Perfect for this time of year.
